미얀마 청년운동가 “왜 모 나잉”의 석방을 촉구합니다

 

1987년 1월14일 대한민국, 군사독재에 맞서 싸우던 서울대학생 박종철은 남영동대공분실 509호에서 경찰의 고문에 맞서 저항하다 목숨을 잃었습니다. 그의 죽음은 6·10민주항쟁의 도화선이 되어 영원히 지속될 것 같았던 군사독재를 종식시켰으며, 더 이상 군부쿠데타로 국가권력이 침탈당하지 않는 사회를 이루어 냈습니다.

박종철기념사업회는 군경의 폭력에 맞서 저항하고 있는 미얀마 시민들을 제17회 박종철인권상 수상자로 선정하여 인권과 평화, 민주주의를 지키기 위한 미얀마 시민들의 투쟁에 연대와 지지를 선언하였습니다.

 

2021년 4월 15일 미얀마, 군부 쿠데타가 일어난 2월1일 이후 단 하루도 빠짐없이 시민들이 거리로 나와 가장 뜨거운 저항의 시위를 벌이고 있는 미얀마의 작은 농촌도시 몽유와(Monywa)의 청년지도자 ‘왜 모 나잉’(Wai Moe Naing, 26세)이 군부에 체포되었습니다.

 

“시위를 하는 시민들 가운데 서 있을 때, 저는 그 어떤 것도 두렵지 않습니다.”라고 외치던 그가 지금 군부의 폭력으로 인해 피투성이가 된 채 갇혀 생사를 확인할 수 없습니다.

몽유와 전역을 군인들이 장악하고 시민들을 감시하고 있어, 몽유와 지역은 언제 무차별한 학살이 벌어질지 몰라 불안한 상황입니다.

 

미얀마 군부는 ‘왜 모 나잉’에 대한 폭력행위를 당장 멈추어야 합니다. 변호인 접견을 보장하고 고문과 폭력에서 그가 벗어날 수 있게 보장해주어야 합니다.

또한 현재 진행되고 있는 몽유와 시민들에 대한 모든 폭력적 시도를 멈추어야 합니다.

 

민주주의 실현을 요구하는 미얀마 시민들의 정당한 요구를 군대와 경찰을 동원, 무차별한 학살로 진압하고 있는 미얀마 군부는 즉각 모든 폭력행위를 중단해야 합니다.

박종철기념사업회는 ‘왜 모 나잉’이 무사히 석방될 수 있도록 함께 노력해줄 것을 한국사회와 국제사회에 호소합니다.

We demand the release of Myanmar’s young activist Wai Moe Naing

 

January 14^th, 1987 South Korea, lost Park Jong-Cheol, an undergraduate at Seoul National University, his life resisting against military dictatorship. His death, which was taken place by police torture in Namyeondong’s interrogation-torture chamber 509, had triggered ‘6.10 Democratic Struggle of 1987’ and brought the regime to an end. After his death, our society achieved democratization, so that no further attempt from military to overthrow our government happened ever since.

Park Jong-cheol Memorial Foundation nominated the people of Myanmar who are now resisting against junta’s violence as the 17th ParkJong-Cheol Prize for Human Rights’ awardee, declaring our solidarity and support for their fight to protect human rights, peace, and democracy.

 

April 15^th, 2021 a young activist Wai Moe Naing had been arrested by junta’s officials in a small rural town of Monywa, where the most heated struggles is happening every single day since the 1^st of February, the day the coup had mounted.

 

Wai Moe Naing once said, “I’m not afraid of anything, when I am in the middle of demonstration with all these people.” But after he had been imprisoned in brutal condition made by junta’s violence, we do not even know whether he is alive or not. Now the whole area of Monywa has been taken over by soldiers, and the citizens are under surveillance of junta. It is becoming more and more precarious because the massacre could happen in anytime.

 

The junta should stop an act of violence to Wai Moe Naing immediately. His right to counsel should be guaranteed and he should be secured from any kind of tortures or violence. Also, any ongoing attempt of violence to the people of Monywa should stop, too.

 

Myanmar’s junta, which is now suppressing a rightful claim of the people by making massacres using the power of military and police, should stop their violent act immediately. Park Jong-cheol Memorial Foundation makes our appeal to the international community including South Korea that Wai Moe Naing could be released safely.

 

1. The junta should release Wai Moe Naing immediately.

2. The junta should release all people and demonstrators who are unjustly arrested.

3. The junta should stop any attempt of violence to the people of Monywa right now.

4. The junta should instantly stop any kind of violent act to the people of Myanmar.
